Inspiration Board (Week Two)
Good morning / Afternoon Everyone! Today we will be going over the movies and shows that have inspired Her Slow Disappearance and portrays the characters the way we wanted to represent them to the audience.
Some examples of the movies I would like to in a sense "mimic" would be the following (I will also be including why they are good references):
- Beautiful Boy (2018)
1. Parent–child perspective
- The story focuses heavily on the parent’s emotional devastation.
- It shows addiction not just as self-destruction, but as something that fractures family relationships.
2. Naturalistic cinematography
- Soft lighting, handheld camera work, muted color grading.
- Makes everything feel intimate and painfully real.
- Great inspiration if you want your short film to feel grounded and raw rather than stylized.
3. Emotional tone
- Quiet tension.
- Awkward silences.
- Subtle breakdowns rather than dramatic explosions.
- Euphoria (2019-present): a stark contrast to Beautiful Boy
1. Stylized portrayal of addiction
- Uses neon lighting, glitter makeup, surreal visuals.
- Addiction is shown through intense color and dreamlike sequences.
- Thinking of using lighting changes to represent emotional states.
2. Visual symbolism
- Mirrors, glitter tears, slow motion.
- Drugs are often portrayed in abstract, immersive ways.
3. Sound design
- Heavy, atmospheric music.
- Internal monologues.
- Emotional vulnerability mixed with chaos.
- Skins (2007-2013)
1. Raw teenage realism
- Shows drug use as messy and impulsive.
- Not glamorized — consequences feel real.
2. Youth perspective
- Adults are often disconnected or unaware.
- That makes it powerful when adults finally discover the truth.
3. Gritty tone
- Handheld camera.
- Natural lighting.
- Chaotic party scenes contrasted with lonely aftermath.
- The Perks of Being Wallflower (2012)
1. Internal depression portrayal
- Shows quiet, internal suffering.
- The character hides pain behind normal teenage behavior.
2. Warm but melancholic tone
- Soft golden lighting.
- Nostalgic music.
- Emotional vulnerability.
3. Trauma + mental health
- The film slowly reveals deeper emotional issues.
- Similar structure could work for your mother- discovery moment.
